Happy Halloween!

Hello, all! Of COURSE I wore my costume to class today, and of COURSE I had a fabulous time doing it; would you expect any less of me?

Heart eye patch:: Buffalo Exchange
Purple gingham dress: Arc
Apron: Made by me from thrifted dress
White tights with hearts: Hot Topic
Pink Mary Janes: Goodwill
This is basically my Zombie Crawl costume, with slightly different makeup-I was, after all, a dead ragdoll rather than an undead human, and it's a very important distinction, you know!
I had a lot of fun and got my picture taken three times! Here's a close-up of the makeup-I'm really rather proud of it. The Glasgow Smile stitches were my own little Batman joke! After class and dinner, I went out with a bunch of friends and we got frozen yogurt, and I'm currently wrapping up the day watching Young Frankenstein. Best way to spend Halloween if you're too old to trick-or-treat and too young to drink (legally :P)! How did you all spend your Halloweens?

By the Pricking of my Thumbs...Or Halloween Week, Day 3

I went witchy today, and no, that's not a nice way of saying I acted like a bitch:
Mirror necklace-Local arts faire
Black velvet Lip Service dress-Buffalo Exchange
Combat boots-DAV thrift
Pardon the crappy photoshopping in the bottom left corner, but I didn't realize my trash basket was in the picture until I'd already changed out of the outfit. That said, how fabulous is this dress? I bought it late last spring and never got the opportunity to wear it because it's very warm-but today it was about 28 degrees Farenheit and snowing, so no worries about overheating! And yes, I know we are all supposed to sniff haughtily at crushed velvet panne solids, but for this dress, I feel like it works and doesn't look cheap or tacky like it can, because the cut is so regal and elegany. I got it for $14 from Buffalo Exchange, and considering it's Lip Service it was probably about $150 originally, so I'm rather proud of the bargain! It is definitely fun to wear, and I felt quite witchy indeed-though it was a struggle not to drag my sleeves in the gravy at dinner! This is another fun piece that I might not wear every day, but it was certainly fun (and kept me nice and snuggly warm) for today-I kept threatening to curse people if they made me mad! :)

Pretty Pretty Princess, or Halloween Week, Day 2

Hello, my dearest darlingest readers! Today, I made an endeavor to put my regular clothes together in a pseudo-costume, just to have a little fun pre-Halloween. Not that I don't sometimes skirt the edges of costume in my everyday clothing anyway, but this time it's deliberate. :) So, today I wanted to be a princess-because outside of the forced marriages, the constant maintenance of a perfect public facade, and the endless state dinners with endlessly boring people, what's not to love? I kid, I kid-mostly. The two teenage daughters of the Prime Minister of Spain, who are pseudo-princesses, are both rad and Goth-y, and Duchess Middleton seems quite a lovely lady. And we all know how bad-ass Elizabeth I was! I, of course, wanted to be an elegant, sweeping-skirted, pseudo Gothy princess-if they made a Disney princess of me, I would sing Emilie Autumn-esque songs and bats, rats, and black cats would come out to help me make my fabulous corsetted ballgown.
Silver chain necklace-Inherited
Black lace blouse-DA thrift
Black tank-Goodwill
Silver and black underbust corset-Punk69
Silver silk dupioni skirt-Arc
Black heeled boots-Ross
Here's a closeup of the lovely silver pin-I didn't realize until I was looking at the pictures that it and my corset were off-center to each other, but oh well!
So that's my first "costume"-Goth princess! I did get a couple more compliments than usual, and even some people who know me well (and thus know how "formally" I dress every day relative to most people my age) asked me what I was all dressed up for. I took great pleasure in telling them I was dressed up to celebrate the fantasticness of life! The ankle length light-colored silk formal skirt was a little tricky to work around, even for me, so I would only dress like this every day if I actually was a princess who lived in a palace with no dirty floors or staircases, and had servants who could give me large napkins to prevent food stains and follow me around with a steamer to get the wrinkles out. But it sure is fun for once-in-a-while! (BTW, the skirt is one of my favorite thrift finds-real silk and I got it for $2.50 on a 1/2 off Saturday sale at Arc!) If you were a princess, what wildly impractical item of clothing would you wear on an everyday basis?

Black And Orange, or Halloween Week Day 1

Well, the title kinda says it all! I'm going to be doing faux-costumes for the res of the week, but I figured the inaugural day really ought to be those two gorgeous and highly under-utilized colors, black and orange!
Black lace front button-down-Goodwill
Orange cami-Fusion Federation
Black Tripp skirt-Buffalo Exchange
Orange striped tights-Wal-Mart
Chunky black sneakers-Arc
Though I do love this color combo, I recognize that it can be a bit overwhelming, especially in the florescent shade I wore today-hence the employment of the black button down to give just a hint of the orange cami underneath. I love, love love this button-down and have no idea why I don't wear it more often-maybe because it wrinkles and I am lazy and don't want to iron a lot of stuff! Until tomorrow (Day 2 of the week, Day 1 of my faux-costumes), darkly yours, Jamie!

Zombies Ahoy!

Hey-sorry for missing the promised vampire post yesterday, I'll do it tomorrow instead. Nope, today we're gonna talk zombies, because today was Zombie Crawl in Denver! I, of course, HAD to doll myself up to the nines:
Eyepatch-Buffalo Exchange
Dress-Arc
Apron-Remade by me from thrifted dress
Tights-Hot Topic
Shoes-Goodwill
Doll-Doll show, makeup by me
Here's a closeup of my makeup:

Here's me and two of my best friends, Kira and Rayna, zombie-ing it up at Johnny Rocket's.

Apparently, I wasn't the only one who had the idea to bring a creepy doll, though I was one of the only ones wh
Hmmm, zombie stuff-I'm actually not as big a zombie fan as I am of, say, ghosts or vampires. However, I do have a few recs:
*Resident Evil movies-stupid but highly entertaining
*Zombieland-I love this movie. It's hilarious, not very scary but very fun!
*The original Night of the Living Dead and 28 Days Later-Both of these are legitimately great films, and absolutely terrifying. Do not watch alone at night!
*The only zombie book I've ever read that I LOVED is Jonathan Maybery's Rot and Ruin, and the sequel, Dust and Decay. READ THEM-they are exquisitely written!

Ooh, Batsy or Goth Symbols Week Day 4

Bats of a different kind today: Specifically, Batman symbols! Yes, I was just thinking today how shamefully negligent I have been about blogging the "geeky" part of Geeky Goth Girl, so I decided I would combine an outfit post appropriate to my theme with a bit of nerdy exposition about my love for Batman. Here's the outfit (and I totally need to get a better light source for night pictures, my apologies for the terrible lighting):
Black t-shirt: Wal-Mart
Batman print dress: Made by me
Black leggings-Wal-Mart
Black combat boots-DAV thrift
Here's a close-up of the print on the fabric-though someday I would like to get a really big, bold Batman print fabric and make a huge, foofy dress out of it, for now this one does quite nicely in its subtlety:

So, Batman geekery ahoy: When I was a kid, I had the passing interest in Batman that most kids do in all superheros-I watched a couple episodes of Batman Beyond here and there, I actually (cringe) thought Batman and Robin was good, and I generally didn't think about him all that much. I also watched a few episodes of the 1960s TV series, and enjoyed them for the campy cheesefests that they were. Fast forward to my young adulthood (14 or so), and I got deeply into Justice League Unlimited, and find I love the relationship between him and Wonder Woman. I started reading all the Batman comics I could get my hands on from my local public library's VERY limited stock-Brian Azaezello's Joker and Neil Gaiman's Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader among them. I wanted more, but couldn't get it-so what was I to do?

I re-watched the two Tim Burton movies focusing on the Dark Knight and find them fascinating, and of course Chris Nolan's fantastic Batman Begins and The Dark Knight played no small part in pushing along my newfound fascination with the character. Actually, the development of my interest in Batman dovetailed neatly with my budding babybat tendencies. As I explored the darker aspects of the world around me, I found a lot to like in the dark-but-heroic man who used shadow, symbology, and intimidation to fight for what was good and right. One of the central tenents of Goth is that darkness is not evil, and Batman really encapsulates that idea. The character's story, which even by the admittance of Bob Kane, his creator, follows very closely to that of Zorro and The Scarlet Pimpernel, contains enough tragedy and darkness to sate even the most sorrow-hungry darkling. Dead parents, a dashing man with a hidden alter ego, a forbidden love that can never truly be realized, hideously deformed villains-all the elements of our favorite Gothic stories are in there, and when combined with the action and adventure of a comic book, they make for a killer story.

When well-written, Batman can be an incredibly compelling character-but now that I am into the comics, I love his supporting cast nearly as much as the character himself. From Barbara Gordon, the original Batgirl-cum-wheelchair-bound Oracle, to Dick Grayson, the original Robin all grown up into Nightwing, to current Robin Tim Drake and ruthless Huntress Helena Bertinelli, the Bat Family is simply fantastic to read about. My hope is to someday see these characters used in a good movie or television adaptation of the Batman mythos, because they add so much to the narrative. They both ground and humanize Batman and give him more conflicts. The only media so far to depict them have been the hokey '60s series and the atrocious candy-colored abominations that are the Joel Schumacher movies, and neither one did any sort of justice to the great characters. Who knows, maybe someday I'll be able to do it!

So what would this Bat-geek recommend to those who would like to learn about the character beyond the mainstream movies? Alan Moore's The Killing Joke is considered the definitive Batman graphic novel, for good reason-I am not always a huge fan of Moore, but that book makes me understand why people love him so much. The series of recent comics ranging from The Black Glove to Batman R.I.P is incredible, and The Long Halloween is another exemplary graphic novel. For those who aren't into comics, the Batman animated series and Batman Beyond are both incredible-honestly, anyone who writes these off as "kid shows" because they are animated is missing out on a hell of a lot of great writing and acting. One of my meters for a "real" Bat-fan vs. someone who only knows the character casually from the movies (not that there is anything wrong with that, but it annoys me when movie-only fans act all know-it-all!) is if their answer to "Best Joker" is Heath Ledger or Mark Hamill; if they say Hamill, I know they know what they are talking about. If you want a primer on where to start, the Nostalgia Critic recently made a very funny and edifying video discussing his Top 11 Batman Animated Series episodes; it's definitely worth a watch! How big of a Batman geek am I now? Last Halloween, I cosplayed Harley Quinn.

Tune in tomorrow, same bat time, same bat channel for more geekery and gothery, this time vampire centric!

Feelin' Batty, or Gothy Symbols Week Day 3

Full disclosure: I love bats-vampires, Batman, Stellaluna- there are so many great associations! Plus, flying rodents or not, they are soooo cute, and make for great Goth-y prints. I actually have a half-sewn bat-print fabric skirt somewhere at home, but seeing as I don't have it with me, I decided to improvise with a quite cool bat article I found purely by chance:
Black lace blouse-Goodwill
Gargoyle necklace-Repeat Boutique
Black cami (under blouse)-Wal-Mart
Bat print cummerbund-Buffalo Exchange
Tiered chiffon skirt-Savers
Buckled boots-Ross
It's a cummerbund! Isn't that just too, too much fun?  I love the idea of incorporating fun, unusual pieces like that into my wardrobe-it makes for a great pop of color, and it's definitely adding a unique touch to an otherwise ordinary (well, ordinary to me) outfit. I'm debating between my other "bat" piece or vampire fangs for tomorrow, so you'll just have to look and see what I choose-either way, it'll be awesome.

Feeling Catty (or, Gothy Symbols Week Day 2)

More kittycats, huzzah! Since I can't have a cat where I live (darn campus housing...) I'm expressing my love of them vicariously though my clothing this week. Today, (as it is so often with me), it was really all about the socks:
Gold bell-sleeved blouse-Repeat Boutique
Black vest-Buffalo Exchange
Beaded bracelet-Forever21
Maroon plaid skirt-Goodwill
Black capri tights-???
Cat socks-The Crypt
Chunky goth shoes-Repeat Boutique
Here's a close-up of the socks-they are just too fun and awesome! I think of them as my Harry Potter socks, because the cat is rather witchy looking and the gold and maroon colors are like Gryffindor!
This is the only pair of capri tights that I own-they mysteriously turned up in my laundry last year, and I asked my roommates and friends, and even posted a sign in the laundry room, but no one claimed them, so I kept them. Normally I dislike footless/capri tights (I've only picked up a couple of pairs of footless tights on clearance, and even then I wear them with boots so you can't tell they are footless!), but these are pretty nice for wearing under kneesocks on cold days like today. I guess even the most annoying fashion trends can have their uses. Do any of you have a trend you normally can't stand that serves an occasional function for you?

Spooktober Treat: A Triple Outfit Post for Day 1 of Spooky Symbols Week

Sorry for the absence the last few days-life sorta snuck up on me, along with midterms, and I didn't have time to blog. But I'm making up for it today with a three-for-one-isn't that exciting? Here's the first outfit of the day, third outfit of last week:
Black t-shirt-Ross
Gold spider skirt-Sewn by me
Fishnets-Wal-Mart
Mary Janes-Shoe Carnival
I love this skirt-the fabric was post-Halloween clearance from JoAnn, and the pattern was so simple to make-from layout to final touches, the whole thing probably took me 3 hours to sew, and that was with having to reset the zipper twice because I suck at zippers!
Here's the last Spider Week outfit, when I did spiders subtle...ish, at least for me!
Necklace-Inherited
Plum camisole-Arc
Black jersey dress-Ross
Lilac corset-Canal Boat Trading
Spiderweb Tights-Target
Here's a close-up of the tights-sadly, they are falling apart and Target doesn't have them any more! Tear! If anyone knows where I can get another pair of cool spiderweb tights, leave me a store name in the comments, and you will earn my eternal gratitude.
And here's why my roommate/best friend Kira is the awesomest in the world-she got me this amazing spider hair clip as a birthday present and was so excited she gave it to me early! And I was glad she did, because it was so perfect for the spider outfits week! Isn't it pretty and fun?

This week, I'm doing assorted Goth-y symbol-I have two cats, a bat, and vampire fangs, so stay tuned to see how those are all employed. This is the first cat print thing I have:
Black pinstripe blazer-Plato's Closet
Purple cami-Random store in New York
Black and purple cat print skirt-Made by me
Black tights-God only knows
Black Mary Janes-Arc
Here's a closeup of the fabric-isn't it fabulous? This pattern was definitely a lot more involved/complicated than the one for the spider skirt, but oh-so worth it-I love how swishy and fun this skirt is! I really want to make one in plain black chiffon and one in black lace now-it's pretty and dressy without being elaborate or fussy, and definitely worth the extra effort it takes to make! Do any of you who sew have a bit-more-complex pattern that you just can't resist using?

Attack of the Spider-Lady-or Spiders Week, Day 2!

More spiders, yay! Let's get right to the arachnids, because it's more fun that way.
Bat necklace-Twin Dragon Asian Gifts
Black spiderweb dress-Made by me
Black and red obmbre fishnets-Claire's
Black pointy boots-Target
If this dress looks a little more costume-y than usual...well, that's because it is. It was actually a Halloween costume from 8th grade, when I went as a dead fairy. Funnily enough, no one really commented on it all day-I wonder what that says about my regular dressing habits that I can wear a jagged-edged pixie-skirted dress with shiny red spiderwebs on it, and no one so much as blinks twice.  It's a fun dress, though, and I enjoyed wearing it-it's actually super-comfortable, and I'm definitely thinking about bringing the pattern out again for some more everyday-styled dresses. I was a little worried that the pattern on the tights might kind of clash with the pattern on the dress, but I think they ended up playing rather well together. I think I'm getting more daring about mixing my patterns! Do any of you have "costume" pieces you've re-used in unusual or fun ways?

Spooktober Week 2: Spiders!

Continuing my month of spooky and Goth-y patterns, we're moving from skulls to spiders this week. Day 1 brings us the unlikely combination of spiderwebs in technicolor, rainbow, what-have-you. Aren't you interested to see now what I'm blathering on about?
Lace dress-Savers
Black jersey dress (underneath)-Arc
Spiderweb Corsetlet-eBay
Leggings-Forever 21
Striped Socks-Street market in London
Doc-Marten-Alikes-Wal-Mart
Here's a close-up of the corsetlet print-isn't it fab? This isn't an actual steel-boned corset, just plastic boned (sure sign of a lingerie corset rather than a real one-it's sold by small, medium, large rather than waist size), but it's so pretty and fun I don't even mind. I think it might be a bit weird even by Goth standards that I have enough spider-web print clothing for a week, but I fully intend to make the most of it! Stay tuned for various spider-things throughout the week.

Adieu, Cranes Belle-Or Skull Week, Day 5

Here's the final day of skull week...I'll miss my little jolly Roger buddies! Today was all about the accessories (I had to work, and wanted more practical clothes!), but here's a shot of the total outfit anyway, just for fun! Oh, yeah, and because outfits are basically the point of my blog. That might make a difference too. :P
Black blouse (under dress)-Wal-Mart
Black lace dress-Buffalo Exchange
Skull bangles-GoodGoth
Skull hairfixers-Walgreens
Skull tights-Rite-Aid
Black buckle boots-Ross
Here's a close-up of the black and white bangles-aren't they too cute for words? I got them in a mystery bag from GoodGoth, and when I remember to wear them, I love them!
Here are the tights-they were only $2 or $3 from Rite-Aid last year around Halloween, and sadly it's starting to show-they have a fair amount of runs in them, and are starting to come apart entirely. I'll have to get another pair, but it's not like I didn't get my money's worth out of these-I wore them at least 10-12 times last year!
Here's the other bangle-I actually have a green one too, but I thought two bangles on each wrist might be just a tad excessive. :)
And here's the hairfixer-for some reason they were real boogers to photograph, so apologies for the blurriness, but this is the best picture I could get! You can also see a detail of the lace on the dress, which is really quite pretty but which I am far too lazy to photograph on its own, so it's a twofer photo!
That's the last of the skulls...at least for now! When I go home for Thanksgiving and Christmas break, expect to see a lot more because my sewing machine and I are going to be busy, busy, busy sewing up all my cool skull fabrics. Tune in next week for a just-as-Gothic but a bit more unusual motif-spiders and spiderwebs!

Skull Week Days 3 and 4: Teeny Weeny Skulls and Skeletons and Musical Instruments

Hi! Sorry for missing yesterday, but never fear-I have outfit pics, so you get to see me work skulls subtly and...not-so-subtly, all in one post! Aren't you all so lucky? :) Here's yesterday's outfit, my own personal Goth-y version of the requisite college student t-shirt/sweatpants outfit-just as comfy, nowhere near as boring-looking!
Black lace overblouse-Goodwill
Skull-print cami-Plato's Closet
 Ruffled black calf-length skirt-Arc
Black kneesocks-Target
Black heeled Mary Janes-Hot Topic
It's really hard to tell from a distance, but this print is  super-adorable. Here's a close-up:
I think this is skulls and Goth-y prints at their subtlest; just a tiny hint of the macabre and unusual, offered only to those who get close enough to look. And though I usually love my outlandish, eyeball-grabbing style, sometimes it's nice to be just a little mysterious. I didn't continue the subtlety today, though, that's for sure!
Pearl choker-Inherited
Green skeleton-print dress-Made by me
Black taffeta underbust corset-Punk69
Black tights-Wal-Mart
  Black chunky sneakers-Arc
The picture really doesn't do justice to the awesomeness of this fabric. I made this dress for a Halloween costume 2 years ago (June Cleaver by Tim Burton, if you're curious), and haven't worn it much since, just because it was one of my first sewing projects and thus has no darts, buttons, or zipper, giving it all the attractive shape of a feed sack. That's easily remedied with a corset, though, so now I have no excuse not to wear it! The fabric has skeletons. Playing musical instruments. It makes me so happy! Here, have a close-up so you can be happy too!
They even gave them little hats! And you can't read the drum, but it says "Rolling Bones." Isn't it too fabulous for words? I also love the lime green-one of my friends walked into class this morning, stopped, and said "Whoa. You're actually wearing a lot of color. I'm surprised!" It was too funny, and very true. Tune in tomorrow for the last day of skulls and such, which will be...highly accessorial, to say the least! Aren't you excited? I know I am!

Stripey Socks and Skulls-Skull Week, Day 2

So, my outfit ended up taking a bit of an unexpected twist today; I was originally wearing plain black tights, but they imploded into a mass of strings around the thigh area two hours into my day. Fortunately, I was on 16th Street Mall and could buy some new ones, but given the choice between a $10 pair of plain black tights and a $4 pair of stripey tights, I of course had to go with the stripes. I don't usually mix patterns, but I kinda like this:
Black jersey shrug-Rainbow
Skull-print chiffon dress-Hot Topic
Skull bangle-GoodGoth
Purple and black stripe tights-TJ Maxx
Victorian-style boots-Ross
I do love this dress-considering how pricey (relatively-remember, I'm on a college student budget!) most stuff at Hot Topic is, I've almost never bought anything there at full price, but when I saw this I had to have it, regardless of the $60 price tag. It is such a fun, flirty, and versatile dress-after I bought it I worried that such a distinctive piece might not get a lot of wear, but it's surprisingly easy to style into a lot of different outfits. I especially like it with the stripes, which is something I don't think I would have done on purpose for fear of clashing patterns/prints-I'm a wee bit anal retentive and like everything to match, so sometimes I will be a bit hesitant about putting more than one bold pattern into an outfit-but after how this turned out, I might have to try more! How do you all feel about mixing prints?

Skulls and Fishnet and Tripp, Oh My! Or, Skull And Crossbones Week, Day 1

So, as I mentioned previously, I want to try and do a different Goth-y theme for every week in October, and I'm kicking off with that most archetypal of all Gothic symbols, the skull. I actually have surprisingly few skull-and-crossbones or skull-festooned items of clothing in my wardrobe, all things considered, but I do have a lot of skully fabrics at home waiting to be sewn up. I do have enough to make a week, though, so here's the first outfit!
Heart Necklace-Arc
Fishnet shirt-Buffalo Exchange
Skull t-shirt-Buffalo Exchange
Tripp buckle skirt-Buffalo Exchange
Patterned tights-Target
Chunky black sneakers-Goodwill

Wow, I totally didn't realize until I was writing out my description that pretty much the entire outfit came from Buffalo Exchange. It kind of makes sense, though-the t-shirt is generic (if unusually patterned), but the fishnet shirt is Lip Service and the skirt is Tripp, and the only place I get that kind of stuff is Buffalo Exchange, since finding Goth brand stuff at Goodwill or Arc is about as likely as finding a hen's tooth. I have one Lip Service jumper and one Lip Service skirt from different Arcs, but that's two finds in about five years, so...yeah. This outfit is definitely a lot more punky and a lot less elegant than my typical, but it was still super fun to wear! I really like the anchor/skull pattern on the shirt, too-it's an unusual combination of two fairly common Gothic motifs, and gives it a bit more kick than your usual skull-themed stuff. Can't wait to continue my parade of death's heads tomorrow!

Monthly Theme Day-Lace!

Hello, all! I'm going to celebrate my triumphant return to blogging with a two-outfit post on one of VictorianKitty's theme days-this time, lace. Here's the outfit I wore to last night's premier of my university's production of Almost, Maine, which I designed a scene for:
Black raschel lace blouse- Arc
Green and black lace corset-Fusion Federation
Black lace skirt-Forever 21
Black lace armwarmers-Claire's
Patent-toe Mary Jane heels-Ross
And here's today's outfit, the official October 1st Lace Outfit!
Black lace shrug-LoveCulture
Black and nude lace camisole-Arc
Lavender net and lace skirt-Repeat Boutique
Black chunky Mary Janes-Arc
So I basically have enough lace stuff in my wardrobe that I could probably do an entire month's worth of outfits, just made out of various lace items. These are just a few of my favorites. Even though the corset in the first one is a fashion corset rather than a real one, it's just so pretty that I forgive it its plastic boning and cheap busk-I love that particular shade of green, and black lace is my third biggest weakness, right after corsets and striped socks. Or, really, any color of lace. I have an especial love of lined stretch lace tops-in addition to this cami, I have an olive green one, two black ones (one of which is kind of falling apart because it's been worn so much...sadface), a purple one and a red one. They are so fun, subtly sexy, and easy to wear! I definitely like stretch lace better in tops, though-the skirt I'm wearing in the first outfit is cheap stretch lace, and it's definitely showing, with all the lovely plastic-y threads hanging out and fraying around the edges. Despite my current almost-moratorium on buying new stuff, I would definitely spring for a long non-stretch black lace skirt!
